On preparing to reprint The Book of Kaos Tarot in 2025, I wished to have some kind of special feature for the first 64 decks only celebrating its launch in Europe (previously the deck was printed in Australia). It occurred to me that I had a fair amount of Tarot symbology in many of my more recent colour paintings (mostly in oils and egg tempera), as once one has delved into such mysteries their presence in one’s work is almost inevitable, especially if one works with the broader western magical tradition, Alchemy, Qabbala and even European mythologies.
I was surprised however just how many of my paintings (or details thereof) worked wonderfully well as Tarot trumps.
Having painted these independently (at least on a conscious level) of consideration of Tarot archetypes, I was quite delighted to discover some of the wonderful links in symbology in often unexpected ways.
Orryelle’s classic B&W Tarot set (samples below) -now out of print for over a year- has 80 cards inc. an alternate Arcana VI and XV. The new edition will remain in print but only the first 64 decks will have the colour supplements.
